ZKey handles every keystroke on your Mac; its only network access is a daily update check.

1. Summary

ZKey is a Vietnamese input method that runs entirely on your Mac. It sends no keystrokes, no text and no usage data, collects no usage statistics, shows no ads and has no accounts. Its only network access is a once-a-day check for a new version (see below).

2. Keystrokes and text

Like any input method, ZKey receives the keys you type while it is the selected input source, to turn them into Vietnamese. This happens in memory, on your Mac. The buffer for the word being typed (at most 256 keys) is cleared when the word is committed. ZKey does not keep the text you have typed.

In excluded apps and in the terminals it leaves alone, keys go straight to the app and ZKey does not change them.

3. Data kept on your Mac

ZKey stores your preferences in the macOS preferences system (domain vn.com.zsoft.zkey): input method, tone style, shortcut, dictionary options, your custom words and your excluded apps. This stays on your Mac and is removed when you delete the preferences or the user account.

The Vietnamese dictionary and the English term lists are bundled with the app and are never downloaded or synced.

4. Update check

Once a day ZKey fetches https://cdn.z-cms.org/zkey/manifest.json to see whether a new version is out. The request carries only the ZKey version you use (in the User-Agent); like any web request, the server sees your IP address. It contains no keystrokes, text, settings or custom words. ZKey never downloads or installs a new version by itself — you decide. Turn it off in ZKey Settings → Cập nhật.

5. Diagnostic logging

Only when run with the environment variable ZKEY_TRACE_COMPOSITION=1 (for debugging) does ZKey log the number of keys and the position of the input range to the system log — never the text itself. It is off by default.

6. System permissions

ZKey does not ask for Accessibility, Input Monitoring or Full Disk Access. The notice “The developer can access anything you type…” that macOS shows when you add the input source is the same for every third-party input method.
